Vevo Meets Mabel:. 2017
Mabel hails from a very musical family: her mother is singer/rapper Neneh Cherry (give a listen to her classic “Buffalo Stance” now) and her father is Cameron McVey (a producer best-known for his work with Massive Attack and Neneh). Mabel, who grew up in Stockholm and currently lives in London, has been writing songs since her teens, drawing inspiration from Lauryn Hill, Destiny’s Child, and Amy Winehouse. She started turning heads in 2015 with the singles “Know Me Better” and “My Boy My Town,” and is getting lots of notice with her debut EP, ‘Bedroom.’ She told Atwood magazine that “the whole EP is about power play: how one second you could be in the driver’s seat, and then something shifts and you’re out of control.” But Mabel is firmly in control of her sound and vision and aspirations. In our “Vevo Meets” session, she talks about being inspired by the pace of life in London, and why she has to sleep with the light on.
